French parliament approves bill on assisted dying

The French parliament has approved a bill on assisted dying, which was approved by 305 votes in favor and 199 against.

The chamber was divided, between the left and the "center bloc", who were largely in favor of the bill, and the far right, who were against it.

MPs also approved the bill on palliative and supportive care, this time unanimously, with 560 votes in favor.

Emmanuel Macron praised the approval of two important bills.

Launched in 2022 by the President of the Republic, the draft law on assisted dying may be the most important in the social field.

Both bills will now go to the Senate, with an a priori review "in the fall".

The bill provides for a medical team to assess whether a patient can use a lethal substance, if they have expressed a clear will to do so. The substance can be taken by the patient themselves or administered by a doctor or nurse if the patient is physically unable to do it themselves.

The criteria are strict: the patient must be over 18 years old, have French citizenship or a residence permit, and suffer from an incurable, serious and advanced disease that causes unbearable suffering and has no medical solution. He must also be able to express his will in a conscious and informed manner.

The debate over this law has been heated, especially in a traditionally Catholic country like France. However, the majority of the population supports the right to assisted dying./ CNA
