Hamas accepts US proposal for Gaza ceasefire

Hamas has agreed to a proposal by US special envoy Steve Witkoff for a ceasefire in Gaza, paving the way for a possible end to the war with Israel.

The new proposal, which provides for the release of ten hostages and a 70-day ceasefire, was accepted by Hamas through mediators.

"The proposal includes the release of ten live Israeli hostages held by Hamas in two groups in exchange for a 70-day ceasefire and a partial withdrawal from the Gaza Strip," the source told Reuters.

The proposal also calls for the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners from Israel, including hundreds serving long prison sentences.

On March 18, Israel effectively ended a January ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Hamas and allied factions began firing rockets and mortars two days later.

Hamas has said it is ready to release all remaining hostages captured by gunmen in attacks on communities in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and to agree to a permanent ceasefire if Israel fully withdraws from Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Israel would be willing to accept a temporary ceasefire only in exchange for the release of hostages, vowing that the war can only end once Hamas is eliminated./ CNA
