Visits to the Western Balkans concluded/ EU Representative Kallas: Our priority

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, conducted her tour of the Western Balkans this week. Kallas visited Kosovo, Serbia and North Macedonia, with a focus on the integration journey of each country, but all as part of the common goals of the three countries.

Through a post on social media, Kallas shared some of her visits to the three countries, while emphasizing that the Western Balkans are of strategic importance to the EU.

Kallas emphasizes that the expansion of the region is the most important geopolitical project for the EU.

Kallas also mentions some of the political messages for each country.

"This week, I completed the second part of my visit to the Western Balkans. The Western Balkans are of strategic importance for the EU. Enlargement in this region is our most important geopolitical project and is also a personal priority for me.

In particular, during my trip, I visited:

Serbia — My message to the authorities in Belgrade was clear. I want to see Serbia progressing towards the EU. To do this, political leaders must implement the necessary reforms and clarify the strategic direction. This is best done by restoring trust and adhering to democratic principles. I also spoke with committed members of youth organizations and civil society. I heard their call and aspirations — for justice, for accountability. Their energy is needed to find a way forward.

Kosovo — I encouraged all parties in Kosovo to break the political deadlock and quickly form a government. Leaders must put aside divisions and prioritize Kosovo's future.

North Macedonia — North Macedonia was the first country in the region to sign a Security and Defence Partnership with the EU, and the first to benefit from our Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. It belongs to our European family. Now it is essential to continue on the path towards the EU,” Kallas wrote./CNA
