Russia and Ukraine exchange hundreds of soldiers on second day of prisoner of

Russia and Ukraine exchanged hundreds of soldiers on Saturday, 307 from each side - the second day of a prisoner exchange that, once completed, is expected to be the largest in the three-year war between them.

The news was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Russian Defense Ministry. On Friday, the two countries each released a total of 390 soldiers and civilians.

"Among those who returned there are soldiers from our army, the State Border Service and the National Guard of Ukraine," Zelensky said on his official Telegram channel.

"We expect others to return tomorrow," he added.

Russia's Defense Ministry also said it expects the exchange to continue, although it did not provide details.

On Friday, 390 prisoners from each side were exchanged and the exchange is expected to continue on Sunday.

Saturday's exchange came hours after Russia attacked Kiev with drones and missiles, injuring at least 15 people and forcing many to seek shelter in metro stations.

In the first talks since the start of the Russian occupation in 2022, held in Istanbul earlier this month - Kiev and Moscow agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each.

The exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side would constitute the largest prisoner exchange since the beginning of Russia's full-scale occupation of Ukraine.

Previous exchanges have not brought significant progress towards ending the war, which began in February 2022./ REL
