Upcoming Ukraine-Russia talks/ Next meeting could take place in the Vatican

US President Donald Trump told European leaders that the next round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations will take place at the Vatican, the US media outlet The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the conversation between senior officials.

Some European leaders are reportedly pushing for any negotiations at the Vatican to result in an unconditional ceasefire. Trump objected to the word "unconditional," even though it was used as a term when calling for a 30-day ceasefire. European leaders ultimately agreed to drop the word.

The Wall Street Journal said the talks are expected to take place in mid-June.

Pope Leo XIV has expressed his willingness to host the next round of Russia-Ukraine negotiations at the Vatican, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the location had not yet been finalized.

"This decision is made by all parties involved. Such a decision has not been made yet," Peskov said.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on Wednesday that "technical" ceasefire negotiations could take place at the Vatican as early as next week. He added that the United States and several European countries are expected to serve as mediators. European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho also confirmed that U.S. and European representatives are expected to attend the upcoming talks. /CNA
