Pope Leo XIV on Holy Wednesday/ Messages of blessings and peace throughout the

Pope Leo XIV held his first papal audience this Wednesday before thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.

The Wednesday general audience is a weekly meeting that popes have held for decades to allow ordinary believers to have a face-to-face encounter with the Pope. The rite features the Pope giving a brief reflection on a topic or passage from Scripture, with summaries provided by others in various languages, and the Pope addressing specific messages to particular religious groups.

The meeting, which lasts more than an hour, usually ends with a short thematic appeal from the Pope about a current issue or upcoming event. Leo began it with his now-frequent mantra, "Peace be with you."

The Pope called for humanitarian aid to reach the Gaza Strip and end the "heartbreaking" burden on its people.

The Vatican said about 40,000 people were present for the audience, which came just days after about 200,000 people attended the inaugural Mass on Sunday for the first American pope in history.

Leo, the former Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago, began the audience with a tour of the square in the popemobile and stopped to bless several babies. Addressing specific greetings to different groups of pilgrims, Leo spoke in his native English, his fluent Spanish, as well as the traditional Italian of the papacy. /CNA
