Prisoners in Corfu prison organized a protest this Tuesday by burning mattresses and other objects to express their opposition to the frequent searches carried out in their cells, according to initial information.

As reported by the Greek media outlet Kathimerini, the riots began early in the morning, when some of the prisoners refused to return to their cells, setting their mattresses on fire. So far, no injuries have been reported.

It was not clear how many prisoners were involved in the incident.

Firefighters dispatched a unit, which extinguished a small fire that had started in an unspecified part of the building. They were joined by a team of police negotiators who entered the facility to speak with the protesting prisoners.

There have been riots in the prison where prisoners have complained about the conditions and intensive checks of their cells, with the newspaper EFSYN saying they claim they are facing inhumane treatment.

They said this included physical abuse, denial of basic services and arbitrary disciplinary measures, and recent changes to the penal code that have made temporary leave and early release almost impossible.

Complaints of violence by prison officers also included an incident where a prisoner was allegedly tied with a rope and dragged by the neck as one of the reasons for the beating./CNA
