Bird flu outbreak in Brazil/EU suspends meat exports

Brazil, one of the world's largest poultry producers and exporters, has confirmed its first outbreak of bird flu on a commercial farm. The highly pathogenic strain of bird flu, H5N1, was detected at a facility in Rio Grande do Sul, according to Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA).

"These efforts aim to eliminate the outbreak, maintain the productivity of Brazil's poultry sector and ensure a continuous supply of safe and high-quality food for the population," MAPA said in a statement on the occasion.

Poultry export restrictions are determined by international health certification protocols, with some of Brazil's trade agreements implementing restrictions across the country, while others allow for regionalized responses based on the location of an outbreak.

China and the EU have suspended poultry imports from Brazil. However, countries such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the Philippines have adopted a regional approach, allowing imports from unaffected areas.

Brazil exported more than 5 million tonnes of poultry meat in 2024. Reuters reported that about 4.4% of that went to the EU. Of the EU's total poultry imports, Brazil is the main origin with a share of 32% last year, according to official EU data./CNA
