Trade talks between the UK and the EU progress

There was "progress" in talks between the UK and the EU last night, government sources say, as Keir Starmer hosts a summit of EU leaders in London.

According to foreign media, the remaining "obstacles" to an agreement, mainly related to fishing rights, were resolved around 10:30 pm on Sunday evening.

The UK-EU summit aims to "reset" relations, with topics including defence, trade, fisheries and a possible youth mobility scheme.

The United Kingdom left the EU on January 31, 2020. The Conservatives have called today's meetings a "surrender summit."

Fishing accounts for just 0.4% of the UK's external GDP, but it was a major topic of discussion during the Brexit campaign. There were promises that the UK would become an "independent coastal state".

However, under the 2020 Brexit deal, EU ships were granted continued access to UK waters.

This agreement expires at the end of June next year.

Some EU countries, including France, want to extend the current agreements for a longer time., foreign.

However, UK fishermen are concerned about this. The Scottish Fishermen's Federation has written to the Prime Minister ahead of today's summit, calling for fishing rights to be protected.

"If another multi-year agreement is on the table, it must be accompanied by the transfer of significant and commercially viable fishing opportunities to the UK," Elspeth Macdonald, SFF Chief Executive, told BBC's The World Tonight programme last week./ CNA
