Zelensky-Vance brief meeting/ Talk on the situation on the eve of the ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the upcoming phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a brief meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance in Rome on Sunday. Zelensky and Vance discussed the situation on the front line, preparations for the Trump-Putin conversation on Monday, the possibility of sanctions against Russia if there are no results, a ceasefire.

Accompanying officials said everything about the meeting went well.

Trump said on Saturday he would speak by phone with Putin to end the bloodshed in Ukraine, a day after the first direct talks between Moscow and Kiev in more than three years failed to yield a ceasefire.

Zelensky was part of an audience with Pope Leo XIV after his inauguration at the Vatican.

"We thank the Vatican for its willingness to become a platform for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia," Zelensky said after meeting with the pope.

The Ukrainian president met with Vance for the first time since discussions in the Oval Office three months ago, where misunderstandings arose about communication between them. /CNA
