Protests continue in Serbia / One-day rally begins in Subotica to demand justice

Motorcyclists, tractor drivers and war veterans staged a day-long demonstration organized by students in Subotica, Serbia, following protests in recent weeks. Protesters are demanding justice for the tragic event in Novi Sad.

The city of more than 90,000 people in northern Serbia with a sizeable Hungarian minority has several universities, whose students have organized blockades since November after the deadly collapse of a tent at Novi Sad's train station, killing 16 people.

They still believe that those responsible have not been fully brought to justice.

A large number of demonstrators were expected to arrive in the city from surrounding villages and the regional capital Novi Sad, some of whom arrived by bicycle or on foot.

Police diverted traffic from most roads leading to the city center, and the roads into the city center used by protesters were completely blocked by farmers supporting the protests with tractors, while war veterans patrolled the demonstration sites since the afternoon.

The most significant part of the demonstration was the now customary 16 minutes of silence in memory of the 16 killed in Novi Sad, which was even more powerful in light of the noise made by those before and after it with whistles and plastic lights. /CNA
