A lightning strike has struck a zoo in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in southern France, injuring 13 visitors, including four children. The incident was confirmed by the local fire department.
Immediately after the lightning strike, zoo staff and first responders acted quickly. The Bouches-du-Rhône firefighters arrived in large numbers to provide first aid. The coordination between medical teams and zoo managers allowed the injured to be treated quickly.
A psychological support unit has been set up to support those affected and witnesses to this traumatic event. Meteorological services had reported the storm, but its intensity took everyone by surprise.
According to the French daily Le Figaró, the injured were taken to three nearby hospitals, in Salon-de-Provence, Marignane and Marseille Nord. The animals in the park were not harmed. The garden opened in 1971 and is home to 700 animals of more than 130 different species./CNA
