Pope Leo XIV calls for peace in Gaza and Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV called on Sunday for a just and genuine peace in Ukraine, as well as for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, in his first Sunday message to people gathered in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.

"I too address the great powers of the world to repeat the call: 'No more war,'" said Leo XIV to about 100,000 people gathered in St. Peter's Square.

Speaking in fluent Italian, Leo XIV – who was elected pope on May 8 – also welcomed the fragile ceasefire recently reached between India and Pakistan, and said he was praying that God would grant the world “the miracle of peace”.

"No more war!" the pope said, repeating a frequent call of the late Pope Francis and mentioning the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, in which an estimated 60 million people were killed.

Pope Leo said that the world today is experiencing "the dramatic scenario of a Third World War that is unfolding piecemeal," repeating an expression used by Francis.

Thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square and along the Via della Conciliazione road leading to the Vatican erupted in applause when Pope Leo called for peace.

The new pope said he carries in his heart "the suffering of the beloved people of Ukraine."

Hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed direct talks with Ukraine to end the bloody three-year war, Leon pleaded for talks that would bring "genuine, just and lasting peace."

The Pope also said he is "deeply saddened" by the war in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid and the release of the remaining hostages.

He added: “But there are so many other conflicts in the world!”

Leon, a former cardinal named Robert Prevost, became the first American pope when he was elected on May 8 to succeed Francis, who died on April 21./ REL
