Conflict escalates/ India and Pakistan accuse each other of launching a

India and Pakistan have accused each other of cross-border missile attacks against major military targets, the most significant escalation yet in the developing conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

On Saturday, India accused Pakistan of launching attacks on dozens of air bases and military headquarters across northern India, using long-range weapons, drones and fighter jets. The accusations came hours after Pakistan said India had fired six surface-to-air missiles targeting three of Pakistan's most important military bases early Saturday morning.

As reported by 'The Guardian', Pakistani officials confirmed that they had launched their counter-offensive against India, under the name Operation Bunyan Ul Marsoos, a phrase that roughly translates as "wall of lead."

International media have reported from Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir, which was rocked by multiple powerful explosions earlier today.

Most shops and businesses were open, but traffic was light on the streets. Government forces, wearing flak jackets and carrying automatic rifles, set up additional checkpoints on the main road leading to the city's airport, part of which also serves as an Indian Air Force base.

Many residents living near the airport fled their neighborhoods for fear of attacks. The Indian military said it was among three air bases that were attacked by Pakistan early Saturday./CNA
