Cardinals are entering the second day of the papal conclave to elect a new pope. Black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney on Wednesday night, signaling that the meeting of cardinals in the conclave has not yet reached a decision.

Thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square to await the result of the first vote, which lasted about three hours.

The 133 cardinals retreated overnight and will have breakfast and attend Mass this morning before returning to deliberations.

They are not allowed any communication with the outside world until a new pope is elected.

What's happening today?

The cardinals will have breakfast around 6:30 a.m., before Mass immediately following.

Then, votes are scheduled throughout the day - two in the morning, two in the late afternoon.

The first vote will be at 10:30, followed by another at 12:00.

The Cardinals will have lunch, followed by two more votes at approximately 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

However, there is not always smoke for each of the four votes. In the first votes in the morning and afternoon, there is only white smoke if a new pope is elected. Otherwise, there are only two types of smoke - at the end of the morning session and at the end of the evening session. /CNA
