'We cooperate for a strong and competitive Europe'/ Von der Leyen congratulates Chancellor Merz

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Friedrich Merz on his election as Chancellor of Germany.

"I look forward to close cooperation. We will work together for a strong and more competitive Europe," he wrote on the online platform 'X'.

German conservative von der Leyen, who first served as Minister of Family Affairs and later as Minister of Defense under Angela Merkel, called Merz a proven friend and expert in European affairs.

At the European People's Party conference in Valencia last week, Merz assured von der Leyen of his support for the new German government.

EU Council President Antonio Costa also expressed his warmest congratulations to Merz on his election.

"I look forward to our cooperation on a common ambitious European agenda," Costa wrote in 'X'. /CNA
