After agreement with Kiev/ US plans to send air defense weapons to Ukraine

The US is planning to send advanced air defense systems to Ukraine after President Donald Trump signed a minerals deal with Kiev and threatened to withdraw from peace talks.

One Patriot system will be relocated from Israel after undergoing renovations, while a second system could be sent from Germany or Greece, according to four foreign officials.

Trump halted all military shipments to Ukraine after a misunderstanding with Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office. But since then, Vladimir Putin has refused to commit to a ceasefire and has withdrawn from formal peace negotiations.

Officials, speaking to The New York Times, declined to confirm whether the proposed shipment reflected a change in the US president's approach to Ukraine.

It comes ahead of a three-day ceasefire discussed this week, while Putin's allies are in Moscow for Victory Day. Zelensky has said he will ignore the ceasefire, calling it a "theatrical show."

Last year, Zelensky asked Western allies for at least seven Patriot-type missile defense systems to protect Ukrainian cities from Russian missile attacks. Kiev has eight systems, but only six are currently operational, as two of them are reportedly being upgraded.

A spokesman for the US National Security Council said there were no details at this time on the strength and deployment of the defensive systems./CNA
