Police in Brazil prevent bomb attack at Lady Gaga concert

A bomb attack planned for Lady Gaga's free concert in Brazil has been foiled by police. The plot was orchestrated by a group promoting hate speech and radicalizing teenagers who were posing as fans of the pop star.

"The suspects were recruiting participants, including minors, to carry out coordinated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails," Rio's civil police said.

The Justice Department said the recruiters identified themselves as members of Gaga's global fan base, known as the "Little Monsters."

The attack was thwarted after a tip-off from Rio police intelligence, which uncovered digital cells encouraging violent behavior among teenagers.

A man described as the leader of the group was arrested in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul for illegal possession of a firearm, while a teenager in Rio de Janeiro was detained for possessing child pornography.

As part of the operations, authorities conducted a dozen search warrants and seizures in four states.

Lady Gaga arrived in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday, sparking Gaga-mania in the city ahead of her first performance in the country since 2012 - and the biggest of her career so far.

"Tonight, we are making history... thank you for making history with me," she told the roaring crowd of two million on Copacabana Beach.

Lady Gaga's historic performance was paid for by the City of Rio in an effort to boost their economy. /CNA
