Pakistan tests ballistic missile amid tensions with India

Pakistan tested a ballistic missile on May 3, as tensions with India have risen following last month's deadly attack on tourists in the disputed region of Kashmir.

The Pakistani military said the surface-to-surface missile it tested had a range of 450 kilometers. There was no immediate reaction from India about the test, which blames Pakistan for the April 22 gun attack on the tourist town of Pahalgam, a charge Pakistan denies.

According to the Pakistani military, the testing of the Abdali Weapon System was aimed at ensuring "the operational readiness of the troops and verifying key technical parameters," including the missile's advanced navigation system and maneuvering capabilities.

Pakistan's President, Asif Ali Zardari, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, congratulated all those who contributed to the successful missile test.

Pakistan does not launch missiles towards the border with India and they are usually tested in the Arabian Sea or in the deserts of the southwestern province of Balochistan.

On April 27, the Indian Navy announced that its ships had successfully conducted anti-ship strikes to "demonstrate the readiness of platforms, systems and crew for long-range precision strikes."

Pakistan's Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, said days ago that the country had "credible intelligence" that India was planning to attack within days.

The Kashmir region is divided between India and Pakistan, but both countries claim full sovereignty over it./ REL
