Decisive elections in Romania

Will Romania continue on its democratic path? This will be determined in the repeat presidential elections taking place today. The Constitutional Court annulled the 2024 elections.

Romania has been in political crisis for months after the annulment of last year's presidential elections. Today, the EU and NATO member country is set to hold a repeat of them.

There are eleven candidates in the race, and by all accounts the best chance is for George Simion, the 38-year-old leader of the far-right nationalist AUR party. In the first round of Romania's presidential election in November last year, he came fourth and later supported the winner, the radical right-winger Calin Georgescu.

Runoff round

However, it is considered impossible for one of the eleven candidates to immediately achieve an absolute majority, so the final candidate will emerge in the runoff round scheduled for May 18.

According to polls, it is difficult to predict who could come second in the first round. The chances are given to the candidate of the social democratic-civic government coalition, Crin Antonescu, the conservative-liberal mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, and the former social democratic prime minister Victor Ponta.

The winner of the annulled election cannot run again.

In the first round of the presidential election in November 2024, the Kremlin's friend, right-wing extremist Calin Georgescu, surprisingly came out on top. But Romania's Constitutional Court declared the result invalid, citing irregularities in campaign financing and suspicions of Russian interference, among other things. The court also banned Georgescu from running for president again. He has been under investigation by prosecutors since late February./ DW
