Election of the new Pope/ Catholic conclave begins preparations in the Vatican

The Vatican's Sistine Chapel is preparing to host 133 Cardinal electors for the upcoming conclave to elect the 267th Pope. The Holy See Press Office has released images and videos of the Sistine Chapel as preparations begin for the conclave that begins on May 7.

On Friday, the Vatican fire brigade was seen atop the Sistine Chapel roof installing the chimney that will emit black smoke if at least 89 Cardinals have not agreed on the next Pope. The white smoke is expected to signal that the 133 Cardinal electors have made their decision.

The Cardinal Electors will begin on May 7 in St. Peter's Basilica at 10:00 AM with the pre-conclave consecration Mass Pro Eligendo Romano Pontifice, to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they elect a new Pope.

At 4:30 p.m. that same afternoon, the 133 Cardinal electors will gather in the Pauline Chapel to pray the Litany of the Saints, before proceeding to the nearby Sistine Chapel.

After the procession, the Cardinals swear an oath committing each of them to faithfully fulfill the Munus Petrinum as Pastor of the Universal Church, if elected.

The oath also binds the Cardinal electors to absolute secrecy regarding all details related to the election of the new Pope, while promising to oppose any outside attempt to influence the election.

The Master of Papal Liturgical Ceremonies then declares 'extra omnes', ordering all those not involved in the conclave to leave the Sistine Chapel.

The first ballot will be cast on Wednesday, May 7, in the evening. Over the following days, cardinal electors will vote four times a day, twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon.

All ballots are then burned and smoke will rise from what may be the most famous chimney to show the world whether the new Pope has been elected. /CNA
