Travel chaos in Spain/ Cable theft delays thousands of train passengers

Travel chaos erupted across Spain on Monday as a major cable theft damaged the high-speed rail link between Madrid and Seville, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and delayed.

The theft, which targeted essential signaling system cables at four different locations, threw the busy road into chaos, particularly affecting those returning to the capital after the holiday weekend.

Madrid's Atocha station became a scene of confusion and frustration, as crowds of travelers sought information from overworked railway staff and anxiously scanned departure boards for updates.

Renfe, Spain's state-run rail operator, asked passengers with early morning departures to delay their arrival at the station to avoid further overcrowding. The outage highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and the widespread impact such targeted thefts can have on essential services.

On Monday, crowds of travelers packed Madrid's Atocha station, seeking information about their trains from railway workers and screens with updated departure times. Spain's state-run rail operator, Renfe, told passengers on trains leaving Madrid before 8 a.m. not to arrive early to avoid further overcrowding. /CNA
