Merz arrives in Paris/Meeting with President Macron on commitment to Europe

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Paris today, on his first trip abroad since officially taking office. Merz met with French President Emmanuel Macron, who welcomed him at the Elysee presidential palace.

Stefan Steinlein, Germany's ambassador to France, welcomed Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, saying the visit underscores the great importance of bilateral relations for Europe.

Europe is seeking to strengthen its defenses amid Russia's war against Ukraine and doubts over U.S. security commitments to Europe under President Donald Trump, but Merz insisted that any peace deal in Ukraine required continued American commitment.

"We will set up a Franco-German defense and security council that will meet regularly to bring operational responses to our common strategic challenges," Macron said at a joint press conference.

Merz, who became chancellor on Tuesday, is a committed European, transatlantic and Ukrainian supporter who has pledged to restore Germany's role on the world stage.

"We will take joint measures to further improve Europe's security and defense capabilities," Merz said before departing for Poland later in the day.

Berlin, like other European capitals, has also been watching nervously as President Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin are expected to reach a quick agreement to end the war.

Merz said the war in Ukraine cannot end without the involvement of the United States.

"We cannot end this war in Ukraine without the continued involvement of the United States of America, this is not something that the Europeans can replace," Merz said. /CNA
