Attack in Pakistan/What is known so far

India launched attacks on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. While Pakistani authorities claim to have shot down five Indian Air Force aircraft in self-defense. Which led to a major escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan.

Today's attacks come two weeks after several tourists were killed in Kashmir. India has accused Pakistan of carrying out the killings, but the latter has denied the allegations.

But what is known so far about India's attacks?

The missile strikes by India targeted "terrorist infrastructure" at nine locations in Pakistan's Punjab province and Kashmir. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the attack as "an act of war" and Islamabad has vowed to retaliate.

Pakistani military sources said they shot down five Indian Air Force fighter jets. A resident and government official told CNN that an unidentified fighter jet had crashed into a school building in Indian-administered Kashmir. According to Reuters, the Pakistani military says it has killed at least 26 civilians. Shelling by the Pakistani military has killed at least eight people on the Indian side of the Line of Control in Kashmir, a senior Indian defense source told CNN.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of his top cabinet ministers after the attacks. Modi has not spoken publicly since India launched the strikes on Wednesday morning. Modi also briefed Droupadi Murmu, the country's president, on the latest military action, according to a post on Murmu's official X account. Muslim-majority Pakistan and Hindu-majority India have been moving ever closer to open conflict since gunmen massacred 26 people in Indian-administered Kashmir last month, with India's Hindu-nationalist government under intense pressure from its base to respond to the attack.

Pakistan immediately denied any connection to the attack, but in the days that followed, the two countries quickly downgraded relations with each other and have since engaged in escalating hostilities. Analysts said it was a matter of when, not if, India would retaliate.

The airport in Srinagar, the largest city in Indian-administered Kashmir, has been closed to civilian traffic and several airlines have suspended or diverted flights to Pakistan and northwestern India./ CNA
