Toxic chlorine cloud in Catalonia/ 160,000 Spaniards ordered to stay home

Around 160,000 people in Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, were warned to stay home on Saturday after a fire broke out in an industrial area, causing a toxic cloud of chlorine, emergency services said.

The fire broke out at a swimming pool cleaning products company at 2:20 a.m. local time in the town of Vilanova i la Zeltre, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Barcelona. The large cloud of chlorine spread over a wider area.

A message was sent to the residents of the five cities:

"If you are in the affected area, do not leave your home or workplace," the Civil Protection service said on the social network 'X'.

According to Catalan emergency services, there were no injuries from the fire, but residents in five towns received messages on their mobile phones warning them to stay indoors.

"It is very difficult for chlorine to catch fire, but if it does, it is very difficult to put it out," the industry's owner, Jorge Vinothales Alonso, told local radio station Rac1.

As he himself pointed out, the fire may have been caused by a lithium battery. Train services scheduled to run in the area were suspended, roads were blocked and many events were canceled.

The fire has been brought under control, Civil Protection spokesman Juan Ramon Cabello told TVE./CNA
