Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric claimed on Saturday that President Aleksandar Vucic's visit to Moscow in recent days "will not lead to an interruption of the European Union (EU) integration process, nor to sanctions from official Brussels."
He told the Serbian state broadcaster (RTS) that European Council President Antonio Costa and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas will visit Belgrade this week. He added that he even expects relations with Brussels to strengthen, which, he said, "will not be to the detriment of Serbia's balanced foreign policy."
"There will be no interruption of European integrations and no sanctions – this will become clear soon, and what we can expect is continued development," Djuric said.
Vu?i? arrived in Moscow on Thursday, where a day later he participated in the marking of Victory Day in World War II, and met with Russian President Putin for the first time since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Serbia is a candidate for membership in the European Union, but faces criticism from Brussels due to the lack of harmonization of its foreign policy with that of the EU, which has imposed strict sanctions on Russia after the start of the war in Ukraine.
Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, stated during her visit to Belgrade last week that, due to Vu?i?'s visit to Moscow, it will be "much more difficult to help Serbia stay strongly oriented towards the European path."
"May 9, 1945 and May 9, 2025 are two dates with different values. Going to Moscow and celebrating with Putin, or his army that is killing people in Ukraine, is in complete contradiction with European values," Kos said days ago.
After the meeting with Putin, during which he spoke about the increase in trade exchange between Serbia and Russia, Vucic said that he is ready to respond to criticism that may come from the European Union./ REL
