Arben Taravari's party leaves North Macedonia's government

The leader of the Alliance for Albanians, Arben Taravari, announced that the party's highest leadership bodies have decided to withdraw from the governing coalition in North Macedonia.

"The central presidency and the branch presidents decided that we should move into opposition," Taravari declared after a meeting held on May 12.

"We are returning to the citizens. In the local elections in October, we will have a much better result," he said, adding that citizens are criticizing them because promises of change have not been fulfilled.

"We did not implement the changes we promised and citizens rightly criticize us for this. That is why we decided to return to the citizens and ask for their trust again in the local elections in October. Today we concluded that if there is a lack of trust within the Government, then we must leave it," Taravari added.

He stressed that dissatisfaction among the Albanian electorate is great, especially due to the use of the "Balancer" and the setbacks on the path to the European Union.

According to him, Albanians feel treated worse than before.

A short while ago, Environment Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Izet Mexhiti, also leader of the Democratic Movement – ??part of the VLEN coalition – stated that he expected Taravari, just as he left the coalition for the local elections, to also leave the government. He had conveyed the message that “you cannot cooperate with the DUI [Democratic Union for Integration] and at the same time be part of the government.”

The Alliance for Albanians, led by Taravari, has decided to compete with its own lists in the upcoming local elections.

After this, the other parties in the WLEN coalition decided to transform the coalition into a party, but without the Alliance.

Taravari also met with the Macedonian Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski, and a new meeting between them has been announced.

The Prime Minister himself has declared that the Government is stable, strong and with a large majority, with or without Taravar./ REL
