Writer Salman Rushdie stabbed/ US court sentences author to 25 years in prison

A man who attacked world-renowned author Salman Rushdie with a knife in front of an audience in 2022, leaving the author blind in one eye, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Hadi Matar, 27, stood silent as the judge announced the sentence. He did not deny attacking Rushdie, and when asked to address the court before he was sentenced, Matar made a final insult to the writer. He said he believed in freedom of speech, but called Rushdie "a hypocrite."

Rushdie, 77, did not return to New York for the sentencing, but filed a victim impact statement in which he said he was distressed by what happened.

During the trial, the author described how he believed he was dying when the masked assailant stabbed him in the head and body, more than once, while he was presenting at the Chautauqua Institute to speak about the writer's safety.

Rushdie recounted the attack in his book "The Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder," which was published last year.

Matar was also charged with an act of terrorism that transcends national borders for the attack against Rushdie. The indictment alleges that he knowingly attempted to kill and knowingly maimed, committed an assault resulting in grievous bodily harm and assault with a dangerous weapon. /CNA
