Vance and Rubio meet with the Pope/Special invitation on behalf of Trump to visit the US

U.S. Vice President JD Vance and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited the Vatican today where they met with Pope Leo XIV. U.S. Vice President JD Vance extended an invitation to Pope Leo XIV to visit the United States, ahead of a series of U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to make progress on a ceasefire in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Vance gave the first American pope a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania inviting him to Washington. The Chicago-born pope took the letter and placed it on his desk, in video footage of the meeting provided by Vatican Media.

"As you can imagine, people in the United States are extremely excited for you," Vance said.

Vance shared this communication as they exchanged gifts.

The pope gave Vance a bronze sculpture with the words in Italian “Peace is a fragile flower” and a coffee-table-sized photo album of the papal apartments in the Apostolic Palace. The pope noted that Francis had chosen not to live in them, adding: “And I can live, but it is not completely settled.” /CNA
