Advisor to former Ukrainian President Yanukovych killed in Spain

Andriy Portnov, an adviser to Ukraine's former pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, was shot dead on Wednesday on the outskirts of the Spanish capital, Madrid, shortly after dropping his children off at school.

The killing of Portnov, 51, was confirmed by Spain's Interior Ministry. He was shot at 9:15 a.m. after apparently dropping his children off at school, authorities said.

Witnesses reported that Portnov was shot “several times” in the head and body by more than one person as he was getting into his car, a black Mercedes Benz, according to police. The attackers then fled on foot.

Madrid emergency services said he was found dead when medics arrived, and that he had at least three bullets in his body.

Portnov had served as deputy head of Ukraine's presidential office from 2010 to 2014 - he was killed in the shooting.

Portnov was a top aide to Yanukovych, who refused to sign Ukraine's association agreement with the European Union - a decision that sparked the bloody 2013-2014 revolution protests against the cancellation of the agreement with the EU and high corruption in the government.

Portnov, who has been under US sanctions since 2021 for alleged corruption, fled Ukraine in 2014 and went to Russia.

It is said that he then moved to Austria. It is not known when he moved to Spain.

In 2019, Ukrainian police launched an investigation into Portnov, accusing him of obstructing the professional work of REL journalists, after he had published the personal data of several members of the investigative unit, Schemes, and UA:Pershy television, who were investigating his connections and relationships with current Ukrainian government officials.

A year earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine had investigated him for treason, for alleged involvement in Russia's illegal annexation of the Crimean Peninsula. The criminal case was closed in 2019./ REL
