Trump announces plan for 'Golden Dome' missile defense system

US President Donald Trump has unveiled a plan to build a $175 billion (154 billion euro) missile defense system called "Golden Dome." Trump said he believes the system could be fully operational by the end of his presidency.

The president said the initiative could be completed by 2029.

The announcement came roughly four months after Trump signed an executive order, directing the Pentagon to develop plans to protect the US from "catastrophic" air strikes.

According to US media, although the exact scope of the Golden Dome project remains unclear, Trump said the system would include "next-generation" technologies, including space-based sensors and interceptors.

"Once fully built, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other parts of the world, and even if they are launched from space," Trump claimed.

The Golden Dome's space components alone could cost $542 billion or €479 billion over the next two decades, according to the Congressional Budget Office. /CNA
