Two Israeli embassy staff members shot dead in downtown Washington

Two Israeli embassy staff members have been shot dead outside a Jewish museum in downtown Washington, the BBC reports.

They were killed as they were leaving an event focused on helping Gaza residents at the capital's Jewish Museum, the event's organizer told the BBC at the scene.

The suspect has been detained and identified by police as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez.

Police say he shouted "Free Palestine" after being arrested and officers will "investigate possible links to terrorism."

The Israeli embassy says two staff members were shot at close range, while Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar called it a shocking terrorist attack.

US President Donald Trump called the attack "very sad" and "undoubtedly based on anti-Semitism."/ CNA
