Eight EU member states form 'crisis coalition'

Eight EU countries launched a coalition of the willing on crisis preparedness, calling for urgent and coordinated European action to make the bloc more resilient to natural and man-made disasters.

Crisis preparedness is a national competence across the EU, but the new coalition of the willing, made up of Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden, said in a statement that efforts from member states and EU institutions are needed as crises have become increasingly cross-border, cross-sectoral and have grown in complexity.

"Russia is engaging in destabilizing actions that can affect all member states. We can see that this capability can potentially increase if Russia is no longer so involved in Ukraine, if we reach a peace agreement. That is why it is very important that all member states work on civil preparedness and strengthening resilience," Swedish Minister for Civil Protection Carl-Oskar Bohlin told European media.

Some of the threats for which the new coalition says the EU needs to strengthen its preparedness and resilience include military, hybrid, terrorist and criminal threats, foreign manipulation and interference, as well as other disruptions caused by natural or man-made disasters.

The ministers participating in the meeting agreed to develop and work on a Common Coalition Agenda that would enable them to implement the Readiness Union Strategy proposed by the European Commission two months ago./CNA
