After phone call with Von der Leyen/ Trump postpones imposition of 50% tariffs

United States President Donald Trump has announced that he will postpone the imposition of 50% tariffs on goods entering the United States from the European Union until July 2025.

The decision comes after the statement of the President of the EC, Ursula Von der Leyen, who said that she had discussed with Trump a deadline until July to reach a good bilateral trade agreement.

Last Friday, Trump said he would impose 50% tariffs starting June 1, following statements by European leaders that they would retaliate with tariffs.

The US president, in comments on his "Social Truth" platform, had revived last Friday's fears of a trade war between the two powers, when he said that the talks were "going nowhere" and that the bloc was "very difficult to deal with."

Mr. Trump told reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, on Sunday that Ms. Von der Leyen "just called me... and asked for an extension of the June 1 deadline. And she said she wants to start serious negotiations."

Shortly after, he wrote on Truth Social: "I accepted the extension - July 9, 2025 - It was my privilege to do so." / CNA
