Investigations launched after power outage for 45,000 residents on the French

Authorities on the French Riviera said Sunday they were increasing security around power grids after an overnight fire at a substation knocked out power to 45,000 residents. The incident also marked a massive power outage during the Cannes Film Festival that was blamed on sabotage.

The flames engulfed an electrical transformer in the western part of the city of Nice, causing power outages in the vicinity, the city's mayor's and local prosecutors' offices said.

"We strongly condemn the nighttime attack against an electrical transformer in Nice," said Deputy Mayor Anthony Borre on 'X'.

A five-hour power outage disrupted the final day of the Cannes film festival on Saturday, knocking out traffic lights and ATMs and forcing organizers to use backup generators. Local officials said a suspected arson attack on a substation and vandalism of an electricity pole were among the suspected causes.

"I strongly condemn these criminal acts that strike our country. In the coming days we will reinforce the network of security cameras around the city's strategic electrical sites," said the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi.

Broadcaster BFMTV reported that the incident worsened after three of the four poles of an electrical unit in the region were sawed off./CNA
