Macron arrives in Vietnam and begins Southeast Asia tour

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Vietnam on Sunday evening for the first leg of a tour of Southeast Asia, where he will present his country as a reliable alternative partner to the United States and China. During his six-day trip, which includes stops in Indonesia and Singapore, Macron will underscore his respect for the sovereignty of Asian countries.

According to French media, President Macron will meet with Vietnam's top leadership on Monday, in the capital Hanoi, and with key energy sector stakeholders on Tuesday.

Macron hopes to showcase France's expertise in civilian nuclear power to Vietnam and Indonesia, which are eager to embrace this form of energy, although other countries, including Russia, are also vying for deals.

"The major challenges of the century can only be faced in cooperation with our partners. I came here to strengthen our ties in key areas: defense, innovation, energy transition and cultural exchanges. Wherever I go, I will say one simple thing: France is a power of peace and balance," Macron wrote on social media after arriving in Hanoi.

Meanwhile, French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet said that President Macron's state visit is of great importance for relations between the two countries. Vietnam is the first destination of the French leader's tour of three Southeast Asian countries, the other two being Indonesia and Singapore. /CNA
