Russia and Ukraine complete exchange of 1,000 prisoners each

Russia and Ukraine completed a prisoner swap of 1,000 each on Sunday, with the handover of the last 303 prisoners taking place today. The three-day exchange, which began on Friday, was the largest since the war began three years ago.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the completion of the exchange, saying on the 'X' platform on Sunday, as he wrote that "303 Ukrainian soldiers are home."

The swap was agreed in Istanbul earlier this month during the first face-to-face talks between the two sides since the start of the war. The prisoner swap, which also included civilians, was the only concrete step towards peace to emerge from the meeting.

Hundreds of thousands of soldiers from both sides are believed to have been wounded or killed in Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II, although neither side publishes exact casualty figures.

Tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilians have also died as Russian forces have surrounded and bombarded Ukrainian cities.

On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that once the exchange was completed, Moscow would be ready to present Ukraine with a draft proposal for a long-term peace agreement. /CNA
