Germany and Ukraine to jointly produce long-range weapons

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that Berlin will seek to help Kiev jointly develop new long-range weapons that can strike deep inside Russia.

Announcing the start of a new form of military-industrial cooperation between the two countries, Merz said that Germany and Ukraine will seek to enable joint weapons production.

"Our defense ministers will sign a memorandum of understanding today regarding the procurement of long-range weapons systems produced in Ukraine, the so-called Long-Range Fire. There will be no restrictions on range, allowing Ukraine to fully defend itself, even against military targets outside its territory," Merz said.

The production of such weapons would take place both in Ukraine and in Germany.

Germany's defense ministry also announced that Ukraine will receive an expanded military aid package of 5 billion euros, including funds to support the production of weapons that are already in Ukraine and could be deployed within weeks.

On Monday, Merz stated that Western allies, including the US and France, would no longer place restrictions on the use of long-range weapons sent to Ukraine for use against Russian targets. /CNA
