Musk 'disappointed' by Trump's tax and spending bill

Elon Musk has criticized one of Donald Trump's key policies, marking a split from the US president whom he helped win re-election in 2024.

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed what Trump calls his "big, beautiful" bill, which includes trillions of dollars in tax cuts and a promise to boost defense spending. The bill now heads to the Senate.

Tech titan Musk told the BBC's US partner CBS News that he was "disappointed" by the plan, which he felt "undermines" the work he did for the president to cut spending.

Musk signed on as Trump's cost-cutting czar - ending funding for US foreign aid, among other projects - before announcing he would step down.

"Honestly, I was disappointed when I saw the massive spending bill," Musk said in the interview with CBS Sunday Morning.

He went on to argue that Trump's plan "increases the budget deficit, not just reduces it."

It is thought the legislation could increase the deficit - or the difference between what the US government spends and the revenue it takes in - by around $600bn (£444bn) in the next fiscal year.

Furthermore, the bill "undermines the work that the Doge team is doing," Musk said, using the acronym for the cost-cutting advisory body, the Department of Government Efficiency./ CNA
