Heavy rains hit the south of Heraklion prefecture on the island of Crete in Greece today, with particular intensity in the Viannos area and the surrounding villages of Kastri, Dermato and Ano Viannos. Roads in many areas turned into raging rivers due to the large amounts of water, causing problems for traffic and the daily lives of residents.

In Platanos of Ano Viannos, a characteristic point of the area, water flooded the roads, making access particularly difficult.

Meteorological forecasts indicate that severe weather phenomena will continue until at least Sunday, with strong storms hitting all of Crete. Today, particularly intense rain and storms are expected, while a slight deterioration in the weather is expected in the late afternoon, before the phenomena reappear on Saturday.

As reported by Greek media, in addition to Viannos, rainfall has also been recorded in other areas of the prefecture, such as Messara, Moires and Zaros, worsening the already severe bad weather situation.

Authorities are urging residents to be especially careful, avoid unnecessary travel and take all necessary safety measures until the weather improves./CNA
