Former German Foreign Minister Baerbock appointed president of the UN General

Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was today appointed president of the United Nations General Assembly, following an election in which she ran unopposed.

Baerbock, who was elected to the position by a simple majority, will take on the highest office in the assembly, a role of largely ceremonial importance that mainly involves organizing plenary sessions among the body's 193 represented countries.

Russia, which was against Baerbock's nomination, requested a secret ballot on Monday, but the vote was considered a formality on the eve of her election.

She will be inaugurated on September 9, shortly before the UN General Assembly holds its general debate, and will hold the post for one year.

Germany, tasked with nominating a candidate for the 2025–2026 session, chose Baerbock instead of Helga Schmid, an experienced diplomat who had initially been considered for the role.

Her appointment to replace Schmid sparked controversy within Germany, particularly from former Munich Security Conference chairman Christoph Heusgen, who called her choice an "insult."

The German government defended Baerbock's appointment, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Steffen Hebestreit calling him "highly qualified for this job." /CNA
