Etna volcano erupts / Toxic ash cloud and anxiety for residents in Italy

Italy's Mount Etna volcano erupted today, sending clouds of toxic ash and smoke into the sky as people ran to escape the danger. According to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), activity on Mount Etna in Sicily began in the pre-dawn hours of Monday and culminated in intense and almost continuous Strombolian eruptions several hours later.

INGV said that Strombolian activity is a relatively low-level volcanic eruption, during which a modest amount of energy is released.

Dramatic photos and videos showed dangerous pyroclastic flows sliding down the volcano as the eruption intensified, and INGV officials said it did not appear to be crossing the edge of the Leo Valley.

Officials said the pyroclastic flow was probably produced by the collapse of material from the north side of the Southeast Crater.

Other photos and videos show people running for safety as smoke and ash rise into the sky and begin to move down the mountainside.

INGV said that explosive activity from the Southeast Crater that has turned into lava fountains and ash falls was reported in several areas, such as Piano Vetore./CNA
