Warning from European report: 40% of the continent at risk of drought

More than 40 percent of Europe is currently experiencing some form of drought, the latest official update on the issue reveals. Areas in southeastern Spain, Cyprus, Greece and areas across the southeastern Balkans are under the highest form of "alert" according to the European Drought Observatory (EDO) report for the period 11-20 May.

But a "drought warning" is also in force across large parts of northern and eastern Europe, following a record hot and dry spring, caused by climate change.

March was the warmest ever recorded in Europe and some countries saw their driest March, Europe's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) previously reported.

In total, 1.6 percent of the 27 EU countries (excluding Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands) plus the United Kingdom are under alert conditions. According to the EDO classification, this means that vegetation is showing signs, as well as the ground being dry, which puts an area under a warning and less rainfall than normal.

The situation is particularly acute in some Mediterranean areas popular with holidaymakers, such as the Greek islands of Santorini and Mykonos. Here, water must be transported from Athens or filtered by desalination plants to fill swimming pools and showers. /CNA
