Video - Etna volcano eruption / Tourists run to escape from the crater's lava

Long lines of tourists can be seen snaking down the mountainside in the shadow of a giant black cloud, after the eruption of Mount Etna in Italy. Very intense and almost continuous eruptions were reported from the Sicilian volcano.

It is thought that part of the southeastern crater collapsed into the bubbling magma, causing the eruption.

A lava fountain then sent billowing rocks, ash and poisonous sulfur dioxide gas shooting out of Etna's crater, visible for miles.

The cloud is now 4 miles high, but is moving slowly northwest and away from the nearby city of Catania.

Despite this, the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center in Toulouse (VAAC) has issued a code red for flights due to the eruption. /CNA
