Failure in local elections/ Donald Tusk calls for a vote of confidence in the

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he would call a vote of confidence in his government in a bid to secure support for his coalition after a major setback in Poland's presidential election.

In his first public comments since the announcement of Sunday's election results, the prime minister attempted to regain momentum as he promised to "get to work" and present a number of draft laws.

Congratulating supporters of right-wing opposition candidate Karol Nawrocki on his victory, Tusk said on Monday that the government had an "emergency plan" and vowed to "not stop for a moment" and double down on his legislative agenda.

In a televised statement, he said he would seek a parliamentary vote to confirm his majority.

This dramatic move highlights the government's difficult position as it faces the consequences of losing the presidential race.

Tusk leads an alliance of ideologically diverse and politically fragile pro-European parties, from the agrarian right to the social democratic left, which promised to reverse the erosion of democratic checks and balances that had marked the eight-year rule of the Law and Justice (PiS) party.

After 18 months of difficult “coexistence” with outgoing president and PiS ally Andrzej Duda, the government had hoped that Rafa? Trzaskowski, a pro-European mayor of Warsaw, would win the election and remove the threat of a presidential veto on progressive legislation.
