NATO calls for a fivefold increase in European air defense systems

NATO is calling on European member states to fivefold their ground-based air defense capabilities as the alliance tries to fill critical gaps in its defenses against Russia, according to a Bloomberg report, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

The plan will be discussed by defense ministers at a NATO summit in Brussels on Thursday.

The five-fold growth target applies to all European members, with different levels for each country. A clear timeframe has not yet been set.

Ministers are also expected to approve this week one of the most ambitious arms stockpile commitments since the Cold War.

The Brussels meeting is a preparation for the leaders' summit on June 24-25 in The Hague.

The need to strengthen territorial air defense is considered urgent, as it concerns protection from drones, missiles, and new generation fighter jets.

"We are not at war, but we are not at peace either. We must strengthen deterrence and readiness for full operational action," declared NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Responding to a question, a NATO official said that air and missile defense, long-range weapons, supply chain and ground forces are key priorities for the Alliance./CNA
