President Trump doubles tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%

Washington has doubled its tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50%, as President Donald Trump seeks to exclude foreign producers from the American market.

The directive, which the White House labeled 'X', claims the increase would "provide greater support" for American industries and "eliminate the national security threat" posed by imported steel and aluminum.

"Nobody is going to get around this. At 25%, they can get over that fence. At 50%, they can't get over the fence anymore," Trump said when he first discussed the increase at a rally in Pennsylvania last Friday.

Wednesday's tariff hike also creates added friction with international trading partners ahead of Trump's July 9 deadline, when a so-called "reciprocal" tariff pause is set to expire. In April, Trump temporarily halted proposed tariffs on a number of countries. The president's team said at the time that they were aiming for "90 deals in 90 days." /CNA
