After the incident in Turkey/ Earthquake also in the south of Crete

An earthquake struck shortly after 2:00 PM in the maritime area of ??Ierapetra, Crete. Specifically, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake had a focal depth of 9.2 kilometers and occurred 14 kilometers east of Chryssi, near Ierapetra.

As the Director of Research at the Geodynamic Institute, Athanasios Ganas, told the Greek daily 'Kathimerini', the morning earthquake in Rhodes and the afternoon earthquake in Crete do not appear to be related to each other, however, both are part of the Greek arc, on its southeastern side.

"The afternoon earthquake in Crete is also not related to the 2020 earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale, which occurred south of Ierapetra. Today's earthquake came from a fault that had not produced seismic activity in the last decade and more time is needed to assess its seismic potential. Unlike the morning earthquake in Rhodes, the earthquake in Crete was superficial and occurred at a distance of 30 kilometers from Ierapetra," the Greek expert said.

Professor of Natural Disaster Management and president of OASP, Efthimios Lekkas, this is an earthquake independent of the one this morning, 5.8 Richter in the maritime area north of Rhodes, but also of the one that occurred a few days ago in Arkalochori, 4.3 Richter. /CNA
