Trump bans travel from 12 countries to the US

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning travelers from 12 countries into the US, including Afghanistan, Haiti and Iran, in an effort to "protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors."

There are seven other countries whose citizens face partial travel restrictions, including Cuba and Venezuela.

There are some exceptions, including athletes traveling for major sporting events, some Afghan nationals, and dual nationals in unaffected countries.

This decision reflects an order from Trump's first term in 2017, when he announced a ban on entry into the US for travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries.

The decision, which takes effect on June 9, fulfills a promise Trump made during his 2024 election campaign and is likely to attract swift legal challenges./ CNA
