EU extends protection for Ukrainian refugees until 2027

The European Union will extend the temporary protection granted to Ukrainian refugees until March 2027, while paving the way for a gradual return and sustainable reintegration into the country once the Russian occupation ends.

This marks the first time Brussels has presented a detailed plan for Ukrainians to either return home after the war, or remain in the bloc on a long-term basis.

Some 4.3 million Ukrainians fled their country and were displaced across the EU in what is considered the largest refugee crisis since World War II.

Under the Commission's plan, unveiled on Wednesday afternoon, the bloc will continue the path charted in the early days of the war, when member states agreed to quickly activate the Temporary Protection Directive to offer hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing Russia's war immediate legal refuge.

The directive has the benefit of bypassing the traditionally burdensome asylum process to speed up access to residence permits, the job market, social welfare, medical treatment and the education system. The law requires governments to reduce formalities to a minimum, given the urgency of dealing with a massive influx of refugees./CNA
